Austin Sammut

Austin Sammut is the managing partner of the law firm Ganado Sammut Advocates, which is based in Valletta, Malta. He read for a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and then for a Doctorate in Law at the University of Malta, and was called to the bar in 1982. He is a director of Europe Research & Consultancy Services Limited (ERCS), his firm’s associated company set up in 1995 to provide consultancy and assistance in EU related projects.

Dr. Sammut has been very active in marketing ERCS services as well as in various presentations and report writing for corporate bodies both in Malta and abroad. This portfolio includes Air Malta, the national airline company, Maltacom, the national telecoms company, the Malta Financial Services Authority, the Malta Development Corporation, Bank of Valletta, the largest Maltese bank, Tug Malta, the national towage company, and the Malta Freeport Corporation.

Dr. Sammut has also been involved in services provided by the company to some of Malta’s largest groups of private companies and has prepared and carried out lobbying strategies for private industry. He was an official revisor in the translation of the acquis communitaire into the Maltese language, as well as in the drafting of various EU related legislation and its implementation. He was also responsible for the setting up of an office in Brussels to serve both Ganado Sammut Advocates and ERCS – this was the first for a Maltese law firm and consultancy company in the European capital.

Dr. Sammut has also provided EU related consultancy and lobbying services to foreign entities, particularly in central and eastern Europe. He was responsible for setting up the EU Unit of the Alliance of Business Lawyers (ABL), an international network of law firms of which he is an active member.
